The AMA Foundation (AMAF) is proud to recognize Gail Ayala Taylor as the recipient of the 2023 Williams-Qualls-Spratlen Multicultural Mentoring Award of Excellence.
The WQS Award recognizes world-class marketing scholars and mentors of color while carrying on the legacy of three legendary educators: Jerome Williams, William (Bill) Qualls, and Thaddeus H. Spratlen. Award recipients have a sustained career commitment to mentoring as well as a significant positive impact on their mentees’ careers. Moreover, through their mentees, they have advanced research and education on issues where racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity intersect with the discipline and practice of marketing. Professor Taylor has educated numerous undergraduates, MBAs, CEOs, and senior business leaders since joining the faculty at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in 2000. Prior to Tuck, she taught at the Kellogg School of Management and the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, and at the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia. She has been a visiting professor at ULB – Solvay Business School in Brussels and a visiting scholar at INSEAD’s Singapore campus. Additionally, she has been a professor on two Semester at Sea voyages where she sailed to 20 countries with 1000+ undergraduates. During her 2018 voyage, the students on the ship honored her dedication and teaching excellence by selecting her to deliver the faculty commencement address.
Her primary research is in the areas of undergraduate transition from college to career,
nontraditional retail sales promotions, and involuntary switching. Her research has appeared in a
variety of academic journals including Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, International
Journal of Research in Marketing, Journal of Retailing, Psychology and Marketing, Journal of Services Marketing among others. She is a contributing author for the books Service Quality in Hospitality Organizations and Advertising Research: The Internet, Consumer Behavior, and Strategy. She has presented numerous times at the AMA Winter Academic Conference and AMA Marketing & Public Policy Conference.
Professor Taylor has been the recipient of several “best paper” awards and has been recognized as a “Hall of Fame Professor” by the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC) for her excellence in
teaching entrepreneurs. In 2022, she was inducted into the PhD Project’s Hall of Fame for her impact in advancing diversity in academia and corporate America. She received her PhD in marketing from Florida State University, where she was a McKnight Fellow. She holds a BA in hospitality management and an MBA in marketing, both from Michigan State University.
