From the AMA Academic Council
The world, as well as higher education, is grappling with the enormity of issues brought to the forefront by the Covid-19 pandemic. Universities and colleges have had to close campuses, with faculty moving from in-person classes to teaching online classes from home (which has disrupted the work–life balance) with an extremely limited transition time.
The events that have transpired (e.g., preparing and teaching online; cancellation of conferences, research camps, and invited research talks; limited access to subject pools and ability to run field studies; freezing of research funds) have created tremendous uncertainty moving forward regarding faculty expectations and productivity.
A vast number of universities and colleges have announced important changes to the faculty review, tenure, promotion, and reappointment process (for examples of what some schools are doing, see here ). The American Marketing Association Academic Council wholeheartedly endorses efforts to provide an additional year of extension on promotion and tenure processes, midterm reviews, and reappointment processes for faculty. We hope that all universities and colleges will extend these processes during the Covid-19 Pandemic.
